Remove obesity without any cost

Board certified in internal medicine a card carrying phd level epidemiologist. One of his many areas of expertise is obesity and weight loss. He teaches an undergraduate class and humbio titled obesity in America is currently close to completing a community based NIH r 1 level intervention targeting weight loss and more than 200 adults in a local underserved community hear more from him later today he's gonna help lead the discussion about the north coast. But for now he'll present some of his current thoughts on community based research. Thanks. Well, thanks very much.

I'm gonna follow terms of interventions and talk a little bit about vivomixx, which is a obesity reduction program in a low income Latino neighborhood. I came here in 2001. We randomize more than 400 individuals from county health, these county primary care centers. We follow them for 15 months and we used a intervention that relied on one in one case management by nurses and dietitians. We compared these intervention participants to usual care. And what we wanted to do was aggregate as well as we could all cardiovascular risk factors and one way of doing this was a Framingham risk. And what we essentially found in this was that if we looked at this Framingham risk probability, that is the likelihood of having a cardiac event over the next ten years again predicted risk. We saw that for usual care, there was an increase in that risk while the case manage group.

Case management to focus on individual cardiovascular risk factors. We saw reduction in that probability. But I think we also learned some other things. First of all, that risk factor management was really difficult. Those differences I just showed you are at best modest even though they are statistically significant. And this is especially true when they were CO comorbidities present. In fact, the participants and physicians that we were working with were really satisfied by this type of intervention. However, the nurses and dietitians were really expensive and we were thinking about sustainability and cost effectiveness. We needed to think about different ways that we might make the intervention more efficient. And then finally. And perhaps most importantly, we found that participants were really interested in weight loss, but the case managers couldn't focus on this issue largely because they were so occupied by risk factor management via medication's. And then finally.

We heard again and again and observed that participants in heart to heart really needed extra help putting the case manager or their primary care physician advice into action. So it's on the basis of these sort of insights that we designed our follow on study, which we call vivamus evos. And this is cited at one of the four health centers that. Studied initially. We have randomized the population of 207 obese. Low income Latino primary care patients. This is a population with low levels of education, most of which was obtained in Mexico. Each of these individuals has at least one inadequately controlled cardiovascular risk factor. We are in the process of following this population for 24 months. Using two separate interventions, the first is a case management approach very similar to heart to heart where we have both one on one meetings with participants to try to facilitate weight loss as well as group sessions that have an informational component as well as a behavioral change component.

The second intervention is essentially adding on to that case management intervention, a community health worker home visit where these various implementation barriers are addressed within the participants home. We also have a comparison group and you'll note that there's unequal randomization allocation between these three these three groups in part because the most important contrast is between the case management with or without the community health worker. But I gave it to another reason for the unequal allocation. Our primary outcome is change in BMI. But we're also looking at a whole host of secondary outcomes, including individual risk factors. Some of the mediators that we think may be involved in facilitating facilitating weight loss in these patients and then also very carefully looking at whether we can detect moderators that might predict who is going to lose more weight within this type of intervention. We are in the process of continuing the intervention. Our last participant was randomized a year ago, so we're following that last cohort of recruits for the next 12 months. In terms of the objectives we have with this study. A lot of this was really focused on using participatory methods to develop this intervention. Specifically tailoring it for not only a Latino community, but for the residents of a particular neighborhood. This is a neighborhood that's in unincorporated San Mateo County, sort of wedge between Atherton and redwood.

We certainly wanted to conduct a RCT evaluating these two weight loss strategies. But we also wanted to integrate this program into the primary care delivery system at this health. A very important part of this is to also estimate the cost effectiveness. Again, we've designed this to be more efficient both through using group sessions and using a health educator rather than a more highly trained dietitian or nurse and then using a community health worker who's a largely been trained simply to provide the sort of advice that will help his fellow neighbors lose way. On the basis of all the information that we're collecting, our hope is that we're going to transition this. Research program into an ongoing county program. Essentially using the clinical trial to obtain rigorous information that builds a business case for why the county should take over this program. Here's just a very quick summary of the design. Much of the intervention is front loaded into the first six and 12 months with a maintenance phase for the next 12 months and. And you'll see that we have assessments at 6, twelve eighteen and then a final endpoint at 24 months. Just to show you a little bit about the population that we've recruited. As I said. This is a low education group, much more so for women, 100 percent of this population was born outside of the United States. Here are some of the baseline values.

I don't wanna focus on anything other than the first line. Which suggests that we have a population that averages a BMI of around 35 to 36. In terms of strategies, we've incorporated into this clinical trial. I wanna talk about some specific elements that make this perhaps different from a clinical trial that is cited in a clinical research. A clinic located at Stanford. So we had to confront what I feel is valid community suspicion about experimentation, particularly the idea that we would have a population that would be randomized the usual care. To overcome this. We did a lot of consultation with community based organizations as well as our county sponsor who runs the delivery system. We felt it very important to integrate this into the healthcare setting both to show that this was a feasible strategy as well as to think about sustainability. We have provided incentives to the participants. But really only for the research aspects of this, we haven't incentives people for the interventional aspects. We sought to minimize the size of the control group, both because it made sense statistically, but also because we wanted to have most of the individuals receiving the active interventions. And finally, even those who are randomized to usual primary care will be crossed over into intervention once the 24 month period is up. So just to sort of talk a little bit about some of the challenges.

A lot of logistical obstacles to success in this type of research. We're working in settings that don't have the infrastructure that we have on campus. Including these community organizations adds extra complexity. The populations and the community based organizations are skeptical and we need to convince them about the value of research. And many of these organizations don't necessarily have the same commitment to scientific rigor that we might want them to do. And of course. Turf wars over funding and personnel are common in this setting. However, this is offset i believe by a large number of charms of working in this sort of, setting. We're really intervening in the real world. Not the optimized research clinic. In some sense. We're trying to re-envision health from the community's perspective and not necessarily impose only our viewpoint on what communities need to do. We're working with a population in great need. And working with organizations that at the end of the day are really grateful for the resources and expertise that we have contributed. And finally, we're contributing to reducing health disparities and i'll just end on the note that I believe that unless we consciously and explicitly take into account. Health disparities and work to reduce them. We may actually add to them if we use interventions and technologies that work best in middle class white populations. Thank you.

Improve your Website rankings with these tips

In this blog, i'll discuss the main questions you should be thinking about if you're responsible for an e commerce website. So. Have you implemented basic SEO for your. Can Google find and show your website properly in search results? And how is your website content performing in Google search results? Before we get into search console, I would like to give a few best practices for e-commerce websites to succeed in search.

Some of the teeth here require changes to the website, so you might need the help of a developer to implement them. The first step to help people find and navigate your e commerce website is to clearly publish all of the products you sell, whether in store, online or both. This will help Google index that information and serve it to users searching for products to buy. Typically, this means creating pages on your side that explain the product you sell. These pages are commonly referred to as product detail pages or PDP. Here are some tips to create good content for those pages. Add product pictures that clearly display the product with muted or transparent backgrounds and from different angles. This helps your website visitors decide what to buy and may attract Google users searching for product images. Add a detailed description of the products and emphasize any features and specifications. This helps users find your products by searching for the details both on your internal search. And on Google.

Add information on purchase details such as availability, price, shipment and taxes. This will inform users on how to pay and when they can get the product delivered. And add customer ratings and reviews to help shoppers with their product research and purchase decisions. While working on your product detail pages. We also recommend adding product structure data to them. This will enable Google to provide enhanced search and image result for your. If you implement the market properly, users can see price availability and review ratings, writing Google search results.

You may also want to upload your complete product inventory to Google merchant center, both for products told online and offline. This approach has a few advantages. You can update data faster like prices and stock levels. You can supply richer data like locality information for inventory. And you have more control over data by pushing it to Google when it changes rather than waiting for Google to crawl your website. In case you have implemented structure data and upload the fee to merchant center, Google will generally prioritize the data from the fee. Check the link in the description to learn more about merchant center and to find the supported languages and currencies. While not really related to search, you should consider setting up Google analytics, e-commerce tracking to better understand your users behavior. This will enable you to analyze your site's average order value. Ecommerce conversion rate, time to purchase and other interesting information. These are just a few tips on ways to optimize your ecommerce website, but there is lots more to learn.

Now let's talk about search console. I'm assuming you have verified your website in search console already. If not, check out my video explaining always to verify your website. It is important to make sure that your structure data is working as intended. When search console detects a new structure. Data type on your side, you'll see a report summarizing errors. Warnings and valid items of that type in your search console property. And site owners will get an email that Google detected the new data type on your site. After implementing product structure data, as I mentioned a while ago. Opened the product report on search console. By default, you will see the transfer error items in the main chart, but you can also click valid with warnings and valid to check their trends in the chart and more details.

Errors disqualify your structure data from being used in which results. But the page can still be shown for relevant search results as a plain blooming. For example, if your markup is missing the price currency operating value fields, those would show up as errors in search console and it won't get the fancy which result. But you can still get a plane blowing. Warnings can provide a somewhat reduced experience for users, but your product may still show up as which results in search. Examples of warnings will be missing description review URL or brand. Check the link to the bridge result status reports in the description to learn more about errors and warnings. To get more details on specific issue. Click an item in the table to open a detailed report. Here you'll see the date when the issue was detected, the number of affected instances over time and examples of pages where Google detected it. You can click a sample url to check instances of the air in your html code. Now that you know what needs to be fixed, you have two options.

Make the requirement changes yourself. Or share the details with the developer that can perform code changes to your website. You can do that by creating a link using the share button. After you or your developer have fixed the error, click validate fixed and Google will validate your changes. In addition to the search console interface. You can also use the rich results test to check structural data validity of a given page on your side. This tool can check the syntax of your structural data and in some cases provide a sample of what the result might look like in Google. After setting up your pages and seeing them get index, your next step is to monitor their performance. But I thought i'll give some ecommerce specific tips in this blog. First open search console and navigate to the performance report. You'll find a series of tables and charts showing how your website is performing on search. You should look for patterns in your data that show how important a specific segment of traffic is. Here 4 ideas you can start with.

Check the quiz, driving traffic to your website. Are people searching for your business name specific products or the general kind of product you offer. Consider adding content to certain areas of your site to optimize your performance on search for quiz. You want to focus on it. Check the click through rate or CTR for your most important product detail pages. If you see that the ctr is low for those pages. Meaning that users are not clicking on your search results, consider writing better descriptions or titles, or adding structured data to those pages. Check if a specific group of pages are not driving product results, which could uncover opportunities to enhance our structured data implementation. For example, you might find that some products are not driving rich results, which could point to a specific template that is missing structure data. And check search appearance to see in a glance the volume of traffic coming to your website through product, which results. To understand your product reach, result performance over time, click product results in the table to add the future, including only this search result. This will update your performance charts to show your product results traffic by queries. Pages. Countries and devices. That's it. I hope this video help you understand a little more about how to succeed on search if you're an e commerce website. In summary, make sure to check the seo basics in your product detail pages. Consider uploading your complete product inventory to Google merchant center. Implement product structure data to be eligible to Google search, which results. Use search console to monitor structured data issues and analyze your website performance with with results.

Pet grooming home base business

Hello everyone, and welcome to another blog of started up. Today's blog is about one of the fastest growing segments in the pet industry, which is a dog boarding business. A dog daycare are also known as dog boarding is a selfish which allows owners to drop their dogs off in the care of professionals for a limited period of time by paying a fee in the boarding facility dogs are fed.

Walked and cared for by the staff who make sure that the dogs remain healthy and happy. Some dog boarding facilities also offer additional services such as pet day care meant for those owners who need care for their pets while they are at work or otherwise engaged. You can also set up a salon or swimming pool to attract more customers who are looking for recreational activities. To begin with. You will need 3000 to 3500 square feet land as the dog needs area to play around and run as for location, we suggest that you locate your boarding in your vicinity of residential area, which have maximum households with pets.

It would be better to leave the land, which at least has a small office space constructed on it as constructing everything from the scratch can cost you a bomb once the area is finalized. Next step is to set up and furnish the boarding you will need to construct at least 6 to 7 rooms or iron cages and furnish them with bed football fan or even an A C or a cooler if you live in a city like delhi after rooms. It is important that you set up a play area for dogs with toys, slides and maybe even a swimming pool if you wish to offer grooming services as well, you can either take up a franchisee of a popular dog salon brand or you can set up your own salon. The advantage of taking up a franchisee of an established brand is that you can get customers smooth.

Without having to market separately. Now let's look at the investments involved in setting up a dog boarding business. A dog boarding requires one time heavy investment on setting up the facility, furnishing an additional construction in the facility will cost rupees 1 to 2 thousand dollars setting up the play area will cost around $350 to $800 dollars and under the $200 to $600 dollars on utility deposits. Building the website permits and other miscellaneous costs as for operational costs, rent over 3000 square feet land will be a porter rupees $100 per month electricity and water bill can amount to about rupees $200 per month and grocery for dogs food will be $100 to $200 rupees per month next major chunk of your operating costs will be on staffing.

Which will be around rupees $800 on two assistants and two more people who will handle the office work. Of course, if you handle the office work yourself, you can save on this cost to a great extent. Also, you may not require more than one assistant in the beginning. Till the time you start getting 5 to 6 dollars for daily keeping next scores will be on marketing. Which will be around 150 to 200 dollars per month. Your source of revenue will mainly be the fees charged to dog owners. This fees will further vary depending on the type of services offered. Type of room and the age of the dog charge for overnight stay for a basic non easy room ranges from $10 to $20. This includes food and body for a room with cooler in the same category you can charge around $10, whereas a similar AC room can fetch you up to rupees thousand if you provide pool services, you can add $15 to $20 to the room charge similarly for a puppy on an older dog who need exclusive attention you can charge up to $20 extra that's about overnight boarding charges as for daycare fees will be lower. At $30 to $50 rupees for 10 hours again. Depending on the 8 size and temperament of the door, you can charge higher than the regular fees to give you an idea. If you get hundred overnight boarding bookings and 50 to 60 day care bookings, you can book a profit of 20 to 25 percent from the total revenue. A word of caution here, it can take you 8 to 10 months to build a sizable customer base. So that's about dog holding business.

Hope you like the idea and for more such ideas you can click on below link. It will help you.

Home base woodworking business

Pick it up, right. You know he wrote in this intro. Today we're gonna talk about 5 projects that we've learned so really well for us. We got a question of somebody asking, what do you make that sells the best like cause there's a ton of different projects. What as a beginning wood worker trying to make some money. What should I go towards to make money, and so we were just replied with the five things that we made the most of. We thought that would be a pretty good topic for a blog, so we're just gonna roll through the five projects that are just kind of our go to explain what's good and bad about each project, what we've learned by building several of them and hopefully that will spark an idea for you. Maybe you can use these as you go to or gives you the confidence to get off the ground with your business. 5 projects are so versatile and so ubiquitous that you can incorporate.

Oh, I know it's a big word. I heard A V E use it, so wow, yeah, you big with us means it's everywhere. So these are five projects that you can make so different and so unique that if a customer just says, hey, can you show me something XYZ that you built, you can point to one of these projects and say. Well, I can do it just like this, but in a door or in a shelf or in a cabinet, something like that. And honestly in your portfolio, people like to see pictures of things that they could see themselves buying. So if somebody wants a coffee table or they want some bar stools, but all your instagram or whatever portfolio has in it is like super tiny detailed keepsake boxes, they're gonna be like, I don't know if they're quite up my alley. Let's just get into. Oh. That's a transition. That's a transition. That's. Yeah. Okay, so number one on our list of super common projects is a desk. We have made multiple videos on youtube of us building desks. That is just what people want, what people want need desks. Whether it's cable space in a room or they genuinely just need a work area. We'll get a lot of requests to customize desks, whether that's cable management, wireless charging, certain types of legs that they want. But when it comes down to it.

They're super simple to make and customize. So if you have a picture of one in your portfolio that so many things is cool. They can look at it and say, hey, that's awesome. And then can we do two extra holes for cable management. You're like, yeah sure, no problem, super easy. So very versatile. There's a lot of directions you can go with this one. You can change the style on the look of them, the feel of them and when it comes down to it still just a really usable desk. And they're a little bit more on the sales side of building desks and why we absolutely love building. I mean, it's because it is great practice for you as a salesperson to upcharge to add little extras to add accessories and customize it for them and really as you customize and it takes more time, more materials, more skill. It's gonna naturally cost more, whether it's labor, whether it's your hourly rate, it's the materials you buy all in all it will cost more. So for example. Somebody comes to you and they say, hey, I need a desk. That's great. That could be 8 million different desks. You can sit down and say, hey. What are you going to use the desk for, are you a computer gamer? Are you a college student, do you want it for decoration from there, they say, you know. Yeah, i'm i'm a computer gamer. I like game. You can say, well, from there we can do multiple shelves for you. You can make different cubbies to hold the tower for your desktop computer. Cable management is a big one that people who do a lot of online gaming like to do.

You can include wireless charging so they can charge all their little I don't know pieces accessories at the same time while they're playing. I just want to put it in here for just a second. Do you remember SAM, the guy we built the liquor cabinet for a good friend of ours. We just built him a desk and we just did all the we just did all of those things to his little desk. We have a ah a batched furniture desk, just a pine top championed edges, hair pin legs built him that exact same desk. We normally sell it for 200 bucks whenever we batch out 5 or more and we turn his almost the same exact style we turn his into like an 800 dollar desk because we used an oak top use 2 by 6 oak for the top oh, big thick and then I made a long tray that did all of his cable management. We had a power strip in there and then I ratted out a big Hole in the bottom so he could put a wireless phone charger through the top of the wood and with all those up charges, we changed it from a 200 dollar desk that we would make out a pine into an 800 dollar desk and it really only cost me and it cost me an extra like two or three hours. Worth of labor to get those other things finished. This hold me. I hope so. Okay, and quickly, okay, number two, piece of furniture that we do constantly is coffee tables. Everybody loves coffee tables, most of what we see is somebody is trying to achieve a certain style or they're trying to tie together a certain look in their living room and a coffee tables a really easy way to do that. So that's what we see most of the time or somebody will come to us and say, hey, I need to match another piece that I have in my living room. So I need the coffee table to look like that. And honestly, that's where we get a lot of repeat customers.

Alright, so on the sales side of things, coffee tables are really good because it teaches you and it trains you how to follow up with your customers and get repeat sales because if you think about it where people put coffee tables in their living rooms and then if you look at a living room. Think of your living room, it's probably where you have the most furniture in one small area that reason being because that's the room everybody sees you have guests and company come over and you sit on the couch in your living room around your coffee table. You serve drinks. Maybe you have some end tables, a shelf in the corner, A TV stand. There's a tiny stuff in your living room. So if there's any area of your house where you want a really nice looking piece that you can you know talk to people about for people to compliment and point out the cool design features, it's your living room. So starting with a coffee table, you build somebody a coffee table. They really like it. You follow up with them in a couple of months and you say, hey, how do you like that coffee table to say, hey, yeah, I like it. It looks really cool. You can even say something like, hey, when I was in your living room, I noticed in that corner on the left side of your wall, there's a little space open and I think it be super cool if we put a bookshelf in there, we can make it match your coffee table by using the same kind of. Oh, that's an awesome idea. I never thought about that. That would be super cool to have a bookshelf in my living room that matches the coffee table and from there you can start another sale with a repeat customer. So you put a really nice piece of furniture in somebody's living room and what do people automatically start doing.

They start comparing everything they have to that one piece of furniture and when you're comparing M D F and particle board furniture to that beautiful oak coffee table that you just built them, they're going to think. Wow, I need to replace some of the stuff I have now with nicer stuff or. I simply want to replace some of my old stuff with newer, nicer stuff. So that's another awesome way that coffee tables are gonna bring you multiple sales. So coffee tables are really good catalyst to train you to find, repeat customers and talk to people who have already bought from. Alright, next up on the list are cutting boards. You've seen us make a bunch of cutting boards on this channel and that's just because they sell really well. It's one of the it's one of those things that everybody uses. There's something that you can batch out and make a lot of and a short amount of time. They don't take up a whole lot of space so you can kind of have them in the corner of your garage or in your basement or something and just have them ready to go and the next time that you need to make a sale or get a few extra dollars of cash. You can just start texting a ton of people that you haven't talked to in a while and just said, hey, running this business now was just batching out of telecom boards 1 or if you want in 1 and that's a really easy way to make a you know a couple hundred bucks very quickly. It's also another thing that you can approach businesses with. One thing, my buddy Bruce, all rich that he does. He makes cutting boards for closing gifts. So he's got a really good connection with a bunch of realtors in town and he just asked me he's like, hey, can I make cutting boards to your clients as closing gifts when they buy a home or sell. He stays really busy making a lot of cutting boards and you can get super fancy with cutting boards. You can do the face grain cutting boards, which we do a lot of you can also do edge and end grain cutting boards, which are also they take a little more time, but they're really, really nice. And if you get a realtor that's got the money to spend on really nice closing gifts, typically 5200 dollars.

You can really start to make a lot of money, especially once you start patching them out. That's also a really good opportunity for you as a business owner to learn how to scale if all you need is an extra 2 or three clamps and you could make another two or three cutting boards per batch that really raises your profit margin. So this kind of teaches you how to scale with a small product that way when you get ready to do something like a restaurant or a department store and build all the display tables. You kind of already know how to think through a lot of products running through your shop at once. Yeah that's why we recommend cutting boards are a great place to start. If you're a business that's just trying to get off the ground and learn. Do this production thing. I don't know. Like what's a blanket ladder, it's time for a field trip. Hey, verse. Is it gonna be lit. Next up is blanket ladders. Jenny made this one with just a jigsaw and a drill. It was going to be so mean if you just stopped and said, they're stupid. Easy to make Jenny made this one alright next on the list are blanket ladders. They're very simple to make. Jenny made this only just a jigsaw and it's real. They do really well in a living room. They're really versatile. You can get kind of intricate with them if you want to all it takes is just a couple of two by fours. You can screw them together, plug the holes. This again is another good project that's a little bit larger. But you can batch them out really quickly. So it's another really good learning opportunity for you as a business owner to batch 5 to 10 of these out and kind of move through the process of doing multiple pieces at once in your shop, these do really well at craft fairs also do the measuring sticks. You know where you measure your kids height on this stick and you can take the stick with you if you move or something like that and blanket letters are really easy to sell because you can. Decorating packages with them. This is something jenny's done. She'll like bundles.

She'll take like a burlap sack and you get it Walmart or something like that and she'll put like four seasons worth of decorations in each one from like hobby lobby or somewhere and she'll sell that bag of decorations for 20 bucks along with the blanket ladder for about 50 or 60 so for 100 bucks you've got a piece and decorations already put together ready for a year round decorating in your living room a lot of people at least. In the south where my family's from. We have a whole bunch of blankets and quilts that are family air looms and they're just collecting dust in the closet, but you can put them on a blanket ladder, display them. That's another sales angle that you can go for. Really, these things are just so versatile for decorations. Just try to find out what's popular in your area and try to throw together a decorating package to go with the blanket ladder cause that's gonna go way further than just having a ladder made out of wood that you're trying to sell. So this is a good way to learn how to market, take good pictures too. Oh my god. So the last thing we're going to talk about is kitchen tables. This is where you can really flex your muscles as a maker if somebody's buying a kitchen table from you, it's probably not the first thing that i've ever bought from you. Maybe it is, but this is a pretty high dollar item once you're starting to talk about like custom kitchen tables, you're looking in the 2 3000 dollar range, just kind of depending on the size of the table. This is where you can learn how to make bigger items. You really have to think about your clamping strategy. You're standing and finishing strategies. It's just everything is different with a larger product. Everything changes when the project gets really big. It's one thing to do a bunch of cutting boards and a few other tables when you get one or two kitchen tables in the workshop, you start to run out of space really quickly. So it's a good exercise in learning how to just manage your space. I guess this is where you can really find out how well your shock is laid out.

If you can't make a large item like a kitchen table in your shop, you may need to consider getting rid of some things or moving some stuff around. Especially if you wanna do any sort of production. You like my crocks. These are my nice crocks, but yeah kitchen tables, if you're at the point where you're selling kitchen tables to your clients, i'm pretty sure you made it because that's something that their family touches eats on. People will trust you if it's like a small cutting board or something, but if they're going to spend 2 or 3000 dollars with you to build a kitchen table. I feel like you've you've arrived. That person is definitely on your fairest wheel. I hope these tips have been helpful. These are just the five things that we make the most of that we feel have the best. Easy concept for learning languages

Today we will discusse the various concepts of language learning and language acquisition. Today we are going to deal with a method of language learning. We already know that language learning requires a particular environment that is classroom and there are various methods that we can use for teaching of a targeted language or teaching of English.

Here we are focusing on teaching of English. So. What are the various methods of pedagogy and. And how these pedagogy or methods evolve. Over the period of time, methods keep on changing as per the need of the society and and the knowledge of how learners learn and how it should be taught. So, if you look at it like previous years it was always considered that one language interferes in learning of other language. But over the period of time, due to researchers and neurology. We got to know that multilinguality actually enhances brain function or cognitive learning. So now we use multilinguality as a classroom resource for language teaching right now when we are dealing with methods of language learning, there are basically three approaches that we follow. 1 is. Grammar translation method. Otherwise communicative.

A third structural approach.

So,

As we move forward, we'll we'll be focusing more on communicative approach today and we later on deal with structure and grammar translation methods when we look at communicative approach, the name of the approach itself says that it has something to deal with communication or the way we interact with each other when we talk about communication. There are at least two people involved in the process. 1 would be the listener and the other would be the message sender or the person who is speaking. So otherwise the communicative loop would never be one would be. Somebody who sends the message or says it out and other would be the receiver. So the sender sends the message to the receiver receiver comprehensive. And then response.

So this is the whole cycle of communication. So we need at least two person for communication when we're talking about communicative approach. So we need to understand why, we actually came up with this approach of communication. So it was major leader, educationist and linguist felt that the grammar, traditional method or grammar translation method was not equipping students for real life communications. They were not able to actually interact in real situations for examples and job interviews or while they have to do a survey, they were not.

They were not able to gather or exert themselves in a proper manner. That's why they came up with an approach called communicative approach. If you look at each one of us has been given a faculty to produce language, but we still produce various kinds of language. So we speak different languages. There are people who speak Chinese. There are people who speaks Latino. There are people who speak Swedish, Sinhalese. Sarah or punjabi Haryanvi bourgeois methylene. These are different languages, but the faculty that we are using for producing these sounds or these languages is the same. Basically we are using our, mount we are using our lips and at times our nose. So the biologically all our features are the same. But if you look at it social linguistically, the language we speak differs. So now we need to understand why there is a difference between the language we speak. As we've already know that we learned the language from our environment. So the language we speak is determined by our environment, people who what the kind of language that people around us are talking.

The exposure to the language that we get or even in the classroom situation, what are the languages that we're exposed to determine the social, linguistic, reputable of ourselves or our language box. Then. After that, we need to learn about. How can we use this communicative approach in classes. If we talk about the classroom, we have multiple number of students. So for communication, the first thing that comes to our mind is that we need at least two students in one group or to work in peace. Here like the owners of learning is transferred from teacher to the student. So the first and major portion of communicative approach is that it is a child centre approach. Now we need to understand what is a child centered approach. Child centered approach is an approach where the owners of learning depends on the child here the child is an active participant in the classroom. He's not just a passive or she's not just a passive recipient here. Like it is a child who is interacting. So the major interaction or the major talking time is taken by the student and not the teacher.

So that is why we call communicative approach as child centered approach. If you look at other ways or other methods, for example. Using of audio lingual or order or method somewhere, there is a lot of repetition or a drill. So in that case, students are repeating what has been told to them. It's not something that is coming from them, so they are not using their natural faculty for language, so they're not coming up with their own language. So to say. So if you look at the basic principles of communicative approach. So the first principle is the role of what is the role of teacher. The role of teacher is reduced to a facilitator, a mere facilitator who gives the real life situation to the students and let them assert let them communicate what would happen with this. Here the children will learn on their own. They'll understand the process of communication. They'll understand the communication loop. They'll be more, they'll, they'll enhance the perspective taking ability. Because in this situation, you actually need to know what other person is trying to say and then you respond so you have to be a listener first. Second thing is lessons are usually theme based. What do you understand by the world. Pain, waste. So when we talk about theme based lessons, the first thing that we need to understand what is a theme. For example, we take themselves.

So what were the various concepts which would relate to water. We'll start from composition. Properties of water. Then from what the states of water.

Then might be water pollution.

Sources of water.

One basic thing uses a water.

Then we can deal with politics of water.

Then we can deal with dams.

Aunt. Hydroelectricity. Then we can deal with religious sentiments related to water.

So on and so forth, we can actually deal with various concepts that can come under one theme here. We have taken the theme as water and then we have seen that. What are the various things that we can cover in one single theme that can be water, now all these topics are needn't be covered in a single class. But it can be taken across classrooms.

So when we talk about communicative approach, the lessons are more theme based. So teacher can actually look at the various concepts that you want to deal with it in a particular stage or age. See, for example. Now if you want to use communicative approach, so if you have to deal with the concept of maybe politics of water, so what is politics of water politics of water basically deal with like what are the various sources of water. How, in our country water is being used, it's a natural resource but how it is being used by political parties or a community to overpower the use of water itself, somewhere determines that help, ah. How a particular state or a particular community gains that strength, like for example, politics of water and also includes like making of dams, how it actually disturbs the life of the people who are living by that source. Whether whose source is it, what are the benefits of making a dam in a particular region, what do we mean by why do we started with a teacher creates a situation that one of them is a group of students who are actually supportive of dams and they consider it as a consider it as a pillar of development. There could be other other group of students who are the other group of students who are activist and do not support dams because somewhere they see that how it actually spoils the life of people who are living by water. Then there would be a group of students who are tribal who have been affected by making of tams.

So teacher can create an authentic situation for learning where there could be an interaction between all three groups and they can understand the nuances of this process of politics of water. Third thing when we talk about it. Lessons are built around real life situation. So when we talk about real life situations, for example, my, you have been overbuilt so your mobile bills are some electricity value thing that you have been overbuilt. So you call the customer care and talk. Talk about being overbuilt, have an interaction or probably it could be you have to write in or you have to apologize to somebody for a mistake that you have done. So these are more real life situations that we are dealing with. That is where communicative approach comes into picture. For this basically using a lot of game songs material which is more authentic, what is an authentic material. Something that we get in real life, for example, newspapers magazine bulletins notices. These are the kind of material that we need to bring in the classroom as these are the materials that we encounter in real life. Then. One of the major thing about a communicative approach is meant to give the feedback. So the teacher actually doesn't give a feedback man when students are in the process of learning on the process of communicating. So the feedback is given post the class. So it's not on the spot query because otherwise the flow of communication would be broken. Others. If you look at the various factors that we have discussed till now, that is like teacher, the role of the teacher is of that of a facilitator. Second, the lessons are more theme based. Students tend to use more. The teacher teacher student tend to use more real life situations. Authentic material is being used in classrooms. Feedback is given post the communicative exercise. So we can see that the whole premise of this approach is based on trial and error. You learn as you. And if you want to bring this approaching classroom, how can we do that first is true. Role play. So what is a role play role play is like when you have been given a certain situation and there are certain characters that are interacting and there is a particular theme that we are talking about or a particular situation we are talking about. So then the students talk to these roles and then interact so first and the foremost way of dealing with communicative approach or a practice that can be done in classroom is road play, then we can create more interview.

So while we are having this activity of more interviews, what is it that we are learning students are actually learning how to formulate a question.

How to coordinate respond to a question. What is the right time to respond, how to put your thoughts in a comprehensible manner, so these are the skills that they are learning while they are role playing or doing a more interview, then we can do a lot of. Learning by teaching. What is going by teaching is just that the hair we are trying to actually topple down the Iraqi in the classroom where the students takes a place of the teacher comes to the board and deed with a particular concept. So what the child is doing is presenting his or her ideas about a particular concept in a coherent whole and interacting with the whole class. So basically the child is learning to interact, with a group of people. It's a more of a medium of mass communication where you're not just you're going to a bigger loop, not just one. There are like there's one sender and there are multiple receivers then went to give attention to whom how to respond to multiple questions.

Went to, how to give. How to give an answer which can satisfy multiple people and if not, then how to deal with a particular situation, then other thing that we can do is to have surveys. Where the children will go out of the classroom situation, interact with people. Interact with people for a particular question. For example, if there's a situation that I want to open a restaurant, but I don't know what kind of a restaurant I should open just so that it's profitable. So i, i can actually do a survey within the. Within the school and go to different people of different age group, different, different gender or you can say people belonging to different class also and, get to know about what is it that they like. What is the kind of cuisine that they prefer, what is the cost that they are ready to pay for a evening or for dinner or for lunch? So that is a kind of a survey that I can run and then come up with the solution. That what is the kind of a restaurant that I want to open. So here another that what we are doing is interacting in real life situation in a real life example in dealing with real people. So it's not something it's not like we can do with simulated situations also.

But here the situation is real life. Another thing about the communicative approaches that we can fill in the information gaps, for example, that we have read something and we are we are unable to. It's a disjointed whole of information. So there are certain gap so we can actually go ask other people about it. Read through a certain newspaper articles, then ask about a whole discussion in a public forum. So all these methods are a part of communicative approach. So what we are doing with communicative approach, we are giving them real life situations to deal with. Now one thing that is majorly a demerit of communicative approach is that we focus more influency. So it's not about being accurate or correct somewhere. Correctness of the assertion is being compromised. But another thing is sometimes what we are saying, it might not be coherent, so we are not actually focusing on coherency. It can come on a later stage when we are comfortable with the language, but somewhere in using communicative approach, we have to kind of a bring in another approach to look at the correctness of the assertions also. So students today we have actually dealt with communicative approach. What are the various features of communicative approach role of teacher role of text, the kind of text that should be used while we are doing while we are dealing with the English teaching through communicative approach and its team merits.
